The path to a learners permit or drivers license begins with preparing for the required state written test. To help get you started, we’ve included the official South Carolina drivers handbook .

Preparing With the SC Drivers Handbook

Before you take the South Carolina written drivers test, we encourage you to take our interactive South Carolina practice permit test. The practice tests are designed to closely simulate the same multiple-choice format as the actual test.  While the practice test questions are not exactly the same, they do cover some of the same topics and are an excellent complement to the handbook.  Together with the handbook, the practice tests on this site can truly help prepare you for the written driver’s test and provide the best opportunity for you to pass the first time.

Topics Covered in the Handbook

The handbook is a great resource to become familiar with the state’s rules of the road and traffic laws. The South Carolina Drivers Handbook is published by the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and covers the following topics.

• Driver’s License – rules of the road, permits, restrictions, regular license
• General Information – safety rules, speed limits, stopping, parking
• Road Test – steering, manual transmission, turning, following, yielding
• Signs, Signals and Markers – regulatory signs, warning signs, guide signs
