California DMV Learner's Permit FAQ

  • When can I apply for a permit in California?

  • What are the requirements to get my learner’s permit?

If you are between 15½ and 17½ you must have completed or be taking a driver education and driver training program. Then you must be able to provide proof of identification and you will need to pass a vision exam and a written knowledge test. If you are between 17½ and 18, you are not required to complete a driver’s education or drivers training program.

  • How many questions are on the permit test?

There are a total of 36 questions on California’s written knowledge test.

  • How many questions must I answer correctly to pass?

You must answer a minimum of 30 questions to pass the test.

  • What steps should I take to prepare for the test?

To prepare for the written test, you should study the California Driver’s Manual. You should also take multiple practice exams – this is a good way to determine your knowledge level and identify any weak areas. The practice exams should closely replicate the actual test, like those available here.

  • What percentage of people fail the permit test?

Approximately 50% of first-time test takers fail to pass the California written knowledge test. Taking multiple practice exams has been shown to be a good way to ensure you are prepared to pass. In California, you have to wait seven days after each failed attempt to retake the test and after three failed attempts you must start over by filling out new paperwork – in other words, taking practice exams and ensuring you are prepared could save you a lot of delays and frustration later on.

  • How much does the permit test cost?

You will need to pay a $31 fee.

  • Where do I take the permit test?

The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is responsible for offering the written test. Visit to find a location and schedule an appointment.

  • What documents should I bring on test day?

You must visit the local driver exam office with your parent or guardian and you should also bring your birth certificate and proof that you are enrolled in or have completed driver education. You will then need to pass the written test and vision tests to receive your permit.
