    When you are 15½ years old you can apply for a temporary instruction permit.

  • What are the requirements to get a learners permit?

    To receive your Learner’s Permit, you will be required to pass a written knowledge test covering Ohio traffic laws and signs as well as basic vehicle safety and operational issues. You must also pass a vision test.

  • How many questions are on the permit test?

    There are 20 general questions and 20 road sign questions on the test.

  • How many questions must I answer correctly to pass?

    You must answer at least 15 out of the 20 questions in each section correctly in order to pass.

    To ensure that you are prepared for the test and that you pass and receive your Learner’s Permit as fast as possible, we encourage you to study thoroughly.   • What percentage of people fail the permit test?

    For every three test takers, one will fail the exam, according to the latest statistics. Some states require you to wait at least a day to retake the exam. Many also charge a re-examination fee.   • How much does the permit test cost?

    There is a $22 permit fee.

  • Where do I take the permit test?

    The Ohio Department of Public Safety’s (ODPS) Bureau of Motor Vehicles Driver Services Program licenses drivers in the state of Ohio. Visit http://www.bmv.ohio.gov/ to find an office near you.

  • What documents should I bring on test day?

    You will need to visit the local driver’s license office with a parent or guardian. Be sure to bring proper identification. Once you have established your age, identity and residence you will need to pass a written knowledge test and a vision test. Upon passing these tests you will receive a confirmation number that you can take to a BMV office to receive your Learner’s Permit.
